John Legend Revealed A Hidden Side To His Love Life, And Chrissy Teigen Had One Big Question

When John Legend appeared on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, his legions of admirers may have been left open-mouthed. During the conversation, the R&B musician was remarkably candid about his past, making a stunning revelation that cast him in a whole new light – and not a completely flattering one, either. But if fans were looking to Legend’s famous wife, Chrissy Teigen, for an explosive reaction, they wouldn’t have been disappointed.

Teigen and Legend have been together for over a decade now, and in that time they’ve become arguably one of the most beloved celebrity couples around. That could be because the stars aren’t afraid to give the public glimpses into their relationship – nor are they afraid to playfully tease each other on social media.

For instance, in August 2019 Teigen complained about Legend’s photo-taking deficiencies. She jokingly wrote on Instagram, “I never have pictures of myself because I am selfless and am the designated photo taker and keeper for my family.” She then poked fun at how Legend doesn’t pay attention to “angles or lighting or general photo ambiance” when he does use a camera.

But Legend defended his corner by posting several photos that he had taken of Teigen. The first snap, which sees Teigen sitting cross-legged on the floor, was captioned by the musician, “When your wife says you’re a bad Instagram husband, but you’re like…” Alongside the next image of Teigen and daughter Luna, he wrote, “Photo by…me! #goodinstagramhusband.”

Still, although Legend and Teigen aren’t afraid to gently mock each other in public, they appear to remain very much in love. A 2019 Vanity Fair magazine cover article suggested as much, saying, “They lean in with affection when listening to each other – particularly Legend, who looks eager and excited every time his wife speaks.”

And, of course, Legend has a long and glittering career to go with that happy marriage. From the off, he was successful, with his debut LP Get Lifted going double platinum and landing him three Grammy Awards. In 2006 he also performed at three massive sporting events: Super Bowl XL, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game and the NBA All-Star Game.

More accolades came courtesy of Legend and Common’s track “Glory,” which featured in Ava DuVernay’s Martin Luther King Jr. movie Selma and netted the pair a Grammy, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. And when the musician diversified, he also excelled, as in 2017 he won a Tony Award for co-producing the Broadway play Jitney.

Teigen, on the other hand, first came to fame as a model, becoming a household name after an appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue in 2010. And perhaps unusually for someone in her profession, she’s a bit of a foodie, even publishing cookbook Cravings: Recipes for All of the Food You Want to Eat in 2016.

Then, of course, there’s Teigen’s career in television. For five seasons, she starred as a co-host on Lip Sync Battle, while in 2020 she earned her own starring vehicle in Chrissy’s Court. The Judge Judy-inspired series airs on streaming platform Quibi.

And, fittingly, Teigen and Legend got together after the model played the musician’s on-screen love interest in his video for the track “Stereo.” Teigen reminisced about this time during a 2013 appearance on The Wendy Williams Show. Apparently, she had gone back to Legend’s hotel room following the shoot.

“We did the music video, [and] we were together for like 12 hours,” Teigen explained to Williams. “We spent the entire day together – me in my underwear and him in a full suit. And I went to go say goodbye to him, to his hotel, and we didn’t ever say goodbye that night.”

However, despite hooking up for the first time that very evening, Legend and Teigen didn’t become an item until months later. In 2014 Teigen told Cosmopolitan “I let [John] be himself for a while. The worst thing you can do is try to lock someone like that down early on then have them think, ‘There’s so much more out there.’”

In fact, Teigen said that she avoided putting any pressure on Legend for quite a while. She continued, “I played it cool for a long time. Never once did I ask [John], ‘What are we?’ Marriage was never my goal because I’ve never been very traditional. I was just happy to be with him.”

And even after Teigen and Legend became an item, not everything was smooth sailing. The model revealed in a 2016 interview with Cosmopolitan, “I was on tour with [John], and he’d gotten sick. He was feeling really bummed and stressed out. He was like, ‘I can’t be in a relationship right now.’ That lasted for one day. Literally, a day.”

Teigen explained, however, that she knew Legend didn’t really mean what he was saying. She added, “I knew that it came from a place other than us not working. It was the stress of him having to maybe cancel a show, and he had never been in a real relationship – or so he says now. I always joke, ‘Remember when you tried to break up with me?’ He’s like, ‘Yes, sorry. Big mistake.’”

Having gotten over that early hiccup, Legend finally popped the question to Teigen while on vacation in the Maldives in December 2011. But airport security almost derailed Legend’s plan entirely, as he explained two years later on Oprah’s Next Chapter. There, the star revealed, “I was trying to hide the ring in my bag, and [Chrissy] can see anything in my bag – I don’t hide stuff from her – so I had to put it in a nondescript box that she wouldn’t question.”

Legend continued, “[The ring] was in my carry-on bag going through the airport security, and security wanted to look through my bag. They wanted to look in that particular box. And Chrissy was standing right next to me, and I was like, ‘Oh my God. I’ve hid it so well this whole time.’”

Legend laughed, “Now as we’re just about to get to the Maldives, [Chrissy]’s going to find out I have a ring in this box. And it’s going to ruin the surprise, and I’ll have to get on my knees in the airport in front of security.” Luckily, though, the airport staff made the decision not to look in the box, meaning Legend’s Maldives Christmas proposal went off without a hitch.

And in September 2013 the couple tied the knot in a courthouse wedding in New York, swiftly followed by an elegant follow-up ceremony at Lake Como, Italy. Legend explained this move to Martha Stewart Weddings in 2014, saying, “One of the first vacations we took together was to Lake Como, so we thought it would be nice to marry where we fell in love.”

Then April 2016 saw the arrival of the couple’s first child, Luna. But while Teigen and Legend were getting to grips with being new parents, the mom was suffering behind the scenes. She opened up about her postpartum depression in an essay for Glamour the following year, writing, “I know [John] must look over at times and think, ‘My God, get it together.’ But he has never made me feel that way.”

Teigen continued, “I love John and Luna more than I can imagine loving anything, and John and I still hope to give Luna a few siblings. Postpartum hasn’t changed that.” And in May 2018 the world was introduced to the pair’s second child, Miles. Both he and Luna had been conceived using IVF treatment, which Teigen called a “complete miracle” in an interview with The Cut.

But despite all of the ups and downs that Teigen and Legend have experienced, they still seem to be happy together. In September 2018 Teigen posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, writing to her husband, “12 years ago today, I met the man of my dreams. And five years ago today, we got married. We have two babies and some pups and a life I am grateful to have. My everything, I love you and am so proud of the story we’ve created.”

In fact, the pair even got matching arm tattoos together in April 2019; Legend’s reads “Chrissy, Luna, Miles,” while Teigen was inked with “John, Luna, Miles.” Teigen addressed the new tats with a characteristically witty Instagram message, writing, “Hey guys, please don’t talk to us unless you have tattoos. We are a cool tattoo family now, and we only want to talk to other tattoo families. Sorry if this seems harsh.”

And after Legend appeared on Armchair Expert in July 2020, his wife also had a few words to say. He and co-hosts Shepard and Monica Padman began by talking about his childhood in Springfield, Ohio. It appeared that Legend’s family was musically talented, too, as his father had played the drums and his grandmother the church organ. The star’s mom, meanwhile, had headed up the local church choir.

“I couldn’t imagine me being a musician without having that upbringing,” Legend revealed. “The church is one of those places where you can still be exposed to a lot of music, and music particularly in a black church is so central to the experience that R&B singers are always going to come from there.” To hammer his point home, Legend revealed that every member of his band had played music in church during childhood.

During his younger years, however, Legend had been homeschooled rather than going to kindergarten. Then, when it was finally time for him to enroll at the local school, his mother had claimed that he was “too smart for first grade.” She was proved right, too, after the school found that her young son was learning at a third- or fourth-grade level.

As a compromise, Legend was allowed to join second grade – despite being a year younger than all the other children. But, ultimately, family circumstances intervened. Legend told Shepard, “After two years at the Christian school, we couldn’t afford it, so [my parents] brought me back home.”

Three more years of home tuition followed before Legend’s parents divorced and he wound up going to public school again. Instead of entering seventh grade with kids of his previous age group, however, he was sent into eighth grade.

And skipping two grades as a kid led to an odd situation for Legend. Specifically, he found himself in the same class as his brother Ron Stephens – despite being a couple of years younger. “I turned out fine,” reasoned Legend, “but I definitely think it was a challenge, and I wouldn’t want to put my kids through that.”

In the end, Stephens helped Legend through this tough period. The musician added, “My brother was always there with me. He took care of me and made sure nobody messed with me. We’ve been through everything – starting with the first day when I was born.” And these days, Stephens is Legend’s barber, accompanying him on tours.

Legend opened up about his career, too, and credited music with helping him overcome his inherent shyness. He said in the podcast interview, “Music was that thing for me that just helped me navigate a lot of social circumstances where otherwise I would’ve been hopeless.” Singing and playing also aided him in connecting with other people on a deeper level.

But, in time, talk eventually turned to relationships. Shepard was first with an admission, saying, “I have a horrendous history of cheating.” He then remarked to Legend, “There’s all these great cheating songs on your albums, and I was like, ‘I see another fisherman at sea.’” And, shockingly, Legend then admitted that he had also been unfaithful to previous lovers.

“I think, yes, I did have a history of it, definitely in my 20s,” said Legend. “I think what happened for me personally is [that] you go through a lot in your life, like your teens, and I was like the ‘two years younger than everybody’ in high school and college… I just didn’t get a lot of girls when I was younger.”

This changed when Legend began to experience success in his music career. All of a sudden, he found himself receiving more female interest than ever before. Legend added, “And when I started to get that attention, I loved it. Just ate it up.” This led to him cheating on some of the women he was seeing while attempting to justify it to himself.

Legend explained, “Part of it, I escaped technically cheating by kind of keeping my relationship ill-defined. But it was really cheating. You can try to get off on technicalities.” After a pause, he continued, “I was dishonest and selfish and just enjoyed this new attention I was getting.” But it seems that everything changed when he met Teigen in 2007.

“At a certain point, you just realize, like, you’re happier being honest,” Legend said. “And you’re happier being faithful and being in love with one person. At a certain point, I just decided that that person was Chrissy, and I just decided I wasn’t going to mess with anybody else any more.”

Perhaps that was because, as Legend told Shepard, his chemistry with Teigen was off the charts. He said, “We’ve talked about it before, but [Chrissy and I] had sex the first night and hit it off. We were both seeing other people at the time. There was kind of a looseness at the very beginning, but we fell in love not long after that.”

And overall Legend claims to be happy with monogamy, adding, “Your whole life is lighter. Like, when you’re able to be honest with the person and, like, you aren’t hiding texts. Your mind is freer. Everything is better.” He hinted that this wouldn’t work, however, unless you were with that special someone to whom you wanted to be 100 percent faithful.

“Obviously, people have to get to that place,” Legend explained. “And they have to realize that the person they’re with is the person that they’re ready to do that for, but once you figure that out, it’s so freeing.” He also noted the repercussions that would come from him wronging his wife, joking, “Chrissy has 12 million Twitter followers. If I were to do anything, it would be career suicide.”

And Teigen’s tongue-in-cheek response to her husband’s revelation was typically amusing. Choosing to focus on his admission of “definitely” cheating in his 20s, the TV host – who first got together with Legend when he was 28 – tweeted, “The other s**t is in the 10s and 30s, so you better be talking the tens, idiot.”

But when she’s not thrilling her many social media followers with insights into her love life, Teigen is a busy mom. And she doesn’t always find parenting a breeze, either – judging by what she tells us all, anyway. Still, she had a solution up her sleeve for one particularly tricky everyday problem.

That’s despite the fact that Teigen’s life seems like the stuff of which dreams are made. She’s got, after all, a top modeling career, a chart-topping musician husband and a luxurious life in Beverly Hills. But the model is also still a working mother dealing with many of the same issues facing parents everywhere. So when it came to coping with her fussy toddler, she took a novel approach that had other moms cheering.

Teigen has become one of the celebrity parents to whom other moms almost always warm. This is probably because she generally appears to be refreshingly honest about her body issues and the ups and downs of parenting. In the past, for instance, she has shared a look at her post-pregnancy belly and asked for tips on how to respond when kids are mean.

Yet it was Teigen’s modeling career that had first propelled her into the limelight. Surprisingly, though, Teigen, who was born in Utah to a father of Norwegian heritage and a Thai mother, hadn’t initially seen a future for herself on the catwalk. “I always wanted to be a teacher or wanted to do something with food. But modeling, I just never thought I could do it myself really ever,” she told The Daily Beast in 2014.

That all changed, however, when she was “discovered” at the age of 18. Teigen was in fact working in a surf shop in California when a photographer spotted her potential. Then one thing led to another, and the teenager was soon taking her first steps on the path to an illustrious modeling career.

“I got an agency and did regular catalog stuff, nothing too glamorous,” Teigen told The Daily Beast. Still, in 2006 she took part in TV’s Deal Or No Deal alongside none other than Meghan Markle, and men’s magazine Maxim made her a cover girl on a 2007 calendar. And soon, it seems, big brands started to notice her charm and appeal. In fact, Teigen started to work for the likes of Nike and Billabong.

But it was Sports Illustrated that really put Teigen on the map. In 2010 the model first appeared in the magazine’s prestigious swimsuit issue, and a star was born. You see, the newcomer went on to win its coveted “Rookie Of The Year” title, which is voted for by the publication’s fans.

This started a long-running partnership between Teigen and the brand, and she has gone on to feature in Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit edition on many occasions. In 2014 the stunning star, now 33, even bagged the cover alongside two other models, an honor typically reserved for the crème de la crème of the industry.

And while historically the modeling industry has arguably been known for celebrating certain body types, Teigen felt that Sports Illustrated embraced her curvier figure. “Your body type isn’t important to them,” Teigen told Elle magazine in 2015. “It was way more about having a personality and being able to represent this iconic brand, which was really exciting.”

Teigen’s success as a print model then led to some TV work, and the star has subsequently appeared on programs such as Watch What Happens Live and America’s Next Top Model. She is also known as a commentator on hit series Lip Sync Battle, which sees celebrities miming to famous songs in a series of contests.

And as if appearing in magazines and TV screens weren’t enough, Teigen has also emerged as something of a foodie. She often, in fact, shares tips and recipes and waxes lyrical about her love of food and cooking. So, despite being a model, the multi-skilled star is seemingly happy to indulge in her favorite treats. “I have never been ashamed to say that I love really dirty food that maybe has high-fructose corn syrup, maybe the ingredients have stuff from old yoga mat parts or whatever,” she told The Daily Beast.

“I’ve always loved snack food; it’s very comforting to me,” she added. So it was a natural progression for Teigen to sign up for some food-related TV shows. She has so far, for instance, appeared on the programs Cookies And Cocktails and Chrissy Teigen’s Hungry. She has even penned a couple of cookbooks, entitled Cravings and Cravings: Hungry For More.

And while her career has taken off, Teigen’s love life has also bloomed. The star is happily married to singer John Legend, in fact, and the couple’s life together appears blissful. The A-list pair had first met in 2007 when Teigen had cast been in the music video for Legend’s song “Stereo.”

They had apparently got talking on set and quickly made a connection, with Teigen later telling Cosmopolitan magazine that they had “hooked up.” However, they didn’t officially start dating for a while. “I let him be himself for a while,” Teigen told the publication, adding that she had “played it cool for a long time.”

But the pair had stayed in touch and communicated via phone while Legend had been on tour. Eventually, then, Teigen had joined the singer on the road, and they had become a couple. They had subsequently dated for four years before, in 2011, the singer had popped the question during a vacation in the Maldives.

Legend had apparently planned a romantic surprise proposal and hidden a ring in his luggage. But his plan had almost been ruined when airport security had asked to look in his bag. “I was, like, ‘Oh my God. I’ve hid it so well this whole time. Now as we’re just about to get to the Maldives she’s going to find out I have a ring in this box, and it’s going to ruin the surprise, and I’ll have to get on my knees in the airport,’” he said in 2013 on TV show Oprah’s Next Chapter.

But it proved to be just a minor bump in the road, and Legend had asked Teigen to marry him over dinner during their trip, hiding the ring in a pile of salad leaves. “I see the little box and then, you know, your heart stops and you get so excited,” Teigen later said on talk show FABLife. “There was no big grand speech or anything. I think it was just very lovely and sweet.”

The couple had later exchanged vows on September 14, 2013, in a picturesque ceremony beside Lake Como, Italy. And when in 2018 the couple celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary, Teigen wrote on Instagram that Legend was the “man of [her] dreams.” “My everything, I love you and am so proud of the story we’ve created,” she said in a touching post.

But Teigen’s perfect life had not been complete until she’d had children. But the model had found that conceiving did not come easily. In 2015, in fact, she revealed on FABLife that she and Legend would have liked to have started a family sooner. She said, “John and I were having trouble. We would have had kids five, six years ago if it had happened. But my gosh, it’s been a process.”

But finally, on October 13, 2015, Teigen announced that she was expecting. Posting a stunning black-and-white shot of herself on a sofa with Legend’s hand resting significantly on her stomach, she told her fans, “John and I are so happy to announce that we are pregnant :).”

“As many of you know, we’ve been trying to have a baby for a while now,” the star continued. “It hasn’t been easy, but we kept trying because we can’t wait to bring our first child into the world and grow our family. We’re so excited that it’s finally happening. I look forward to all the belly-touching!”

The star then appeared to embrace every step of her pregnancy, proudly sharing images of herself sporting a baby bump. One posted on Instagram ahead of the 2016 Academy Awards showed Teigen’s delicate dress stretched over her stomach while two people adjusted it. “#Oscars belly,” wrote the mom-to-be.

The couple later revealed that they had undergone in vitro fertilization (IVF) and hand-picked the gender. “I’ve made this decision. Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo,” the presenter told People magazine. “I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.’”

Little Luna Stephens was then born on April 14, 2016, and her ecstatic parents both posted messages on social media announcing her arrival. However, their family had evidently not been quite complete. In the summer of 2017, in fact, Teigen told Cosmopolitan that the couple were gearing up “to do something super hard, which is the IVF process, all over again.”

And in November that year the couple had some wonderful news: they were expecting. In a touching Instagram video, Luna even helped them announce the pregnancy. In the clip, Teigen points the camera pointing at her tummy and asks, “Luna, what’s in here?” “Baby,” the toddler replies. Son Miles Stephens was subsequently born in May 2018, and since then both of the adorable tots have become fixtures online, with their excited mom sharing plenty of sweet anecdotes and cute pictures.

But Teigen has not shied away from sharing any of the downsides, either. And it was no different when the TV presenter was finding it hard getting Luna to eat the meals that she had cooked. She even told Rachael Ray that Luna’s objections “kind of breaks [her] heart.” But the foodie had an ingenious way of overcoming it: she made Luna her own menu.

In December 2018 Teigen shared her cute menu on her social media. It is laminated and features a handful of kid-friendly recipes for her two-year-old daughter to choose from. “I made a restaurant for my two-and-a-half-year-old,” she tweeted. “Trying to get Luna to eat by being psychotic.”

Each page of the menu has a picture of the meal on offer along with the name of the dish and a little description. The choices include cereal with bananas and crispy fish sticks, which Teigen enticingly says is served with Luna’s choice of “dip-dip.” Chicken tenders also come with “tomato dip-dip.”

There is also a cheese quesadilla “in a warm fried tortilla” and ham-and-cheese “Lunables.” The latter is described as “ham and cheese sandwiched between two buttery crackers.” Chicken spaghetti is on offer, too, served alongside some healthy broccoli. A grilled cheese is further served with a portion of juicy-looking blueberries and raspberries.

Upping the appeal even further, Teigen has made sure that the food looks as attractive as possible too. Each plate is styled differently, but they are all clearly designed to tempt a toddler. One dish even bears the tot’s name, and another is in the shape of a cat with little pink ears.

Teigen has even added prices to the dishes to complete the restaurant effect. So the cereal with banana will set Luna back four dollars, while the grilled cheese is a steal at three dollars. When someone online quizzed her about the prices, the model explained, “I feel like if she pays she will eat it (fake money!).” “Yes, she is my boss,” she quipped, when another person asked if Luna had a job.

The entire menu is also neatly wrapped in plastic to protect it from those sticky fingers. “Buying a laminator is the best thing to have ever happened to me,” Teigen admitted in the caption for the video, which shows her flipping through the pages as she jokes, “I have a problem!”

But the army of fans who follow Teigen online did not agree that it was a problem. Quite the opposite, in fact. The star’s accounts were flooded with messages from people saying that the menu could be the answer to their own meal-related troubles. Many even said they’d be following in her footsteps.

“This is awesome!” said one excited fan on Twitter. “I’ll be starting one for my two-year-old today. He (naturally) loves to be in charge of his meals, and this will make things so much easier. Thanks for sharing!” Another said, “Publish this. Need one for my daughter. For realz.”

Another grateful follower said they were “so tired of the ‘what do you want for a snack/lunch/breakfast?’ every day,” calling Teigen’s toddler menu idea “brilliant.” “Limited options, choose one. Done,” the person said. One mother called it “genius,” tweeting, “I am currently in the ‘loves it’ one day & ‘hates it’ the next. You aren’t psychotic. Toddlers are.”

One parent said on Instagram that they would be making one for their son, who has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The person wrote, “Thank you for posting this. My son has some delays in communication due to frustration/ADHD and some other things.”

They continued, “He struggles with making choices and getting overwhelmed. And choosing what he wants for dinner/lunch, an easy task for most, can create anxiety for him. I am going to make him one of these visual books for meals so it will be easier for him to choose! Thank you!”

And one of the best reactions of all has been from Luna herself. Teigen has since revealed, in fact, that the menu seems to be doing the trick for the picky toddler. She even updated her fans by tweeting an adorable video showing Luna paying $3 for the tasty-looking meal she had ordered.

The clip shows Luna standing beside her dinner table, peeling off bills for her mother, before sitting down to eat. Mom even received a tip from her satisfied customer. “It’s working!!!!” the thrilled model told her followers. “She now eats all her food when she orders from the menu and pays for it.”

Teigen’s menu didn’t just appeal to parents, though. In fact, it also caught the eye of some food companies. Kraft even suggested that she add its macaroni and cheese to Luna’s list. It also revealed a picture and details in the style of Teigen’s menu, describing the meal as “delicious macaroni noodles covered in gooey cheesy goodness.”

And Teigen’s “Lunables” – apparently a twist on the Lunchables brand – went down a storm with the brand, which tweeted, “Okay, your spelling of Lunables is so cute we’re considering mixing things up by going for a rebrand.” It certainly looks as if Teigen’s idea has captured the imagination. So could it become another cookbook idea for the multi-talented star?
